For a couple of weeks now, each table team in 5KA has been researching one of the eight planets in our solar system. We have used lots of different sources like books, encyclopedias and websites, to make a ‘Wiki Fact File’ about each planet.
On Tuesday, we had lots of fun creating planet mobiles, using our interesting facts along with some polystyrene balls, glue, glitter and recycled CDs!
They look great hanging from the ceiling of our classroom!

Hi. We enjoyed making planet mobiles. It was fun. Hannah’s planet was Neptune, Rheannon’s planet was Venus. We both did 2 facts, we both had glitter, and we didn’t have a ring on either.

We were doing the same planet, and that was Mercury. We found out lots of interesting facts e.g Mecury is the closest planet to the sun but it is not the hottest, Venus is. We did 2 facts each and then made a model of Mercury. To make the planets we used foam balls and C.D disks for the planets with rings. We then put the facts and planets together and hang them up.
It was great!!!

I am currently doing a unit about planets in my class and am wondering if you could send a lesson plan on how you created those excellent planets. Any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers Jason

Here’s how to make your own planet mobiles:
Firstly…
1. Colour in a polystyrene ball with textas in the colours of the planet you are creating.
2. Brush on craft glue and add glitter, if desired.
If your planet has a ring,
3. Cut your polystyrene ball in half (with teacher assistance)
4. Put glue on the inner portion of an old compact disc (perhaps recycle one that didn’t work when you were burning a CD – this is a great way to reduce, reuse and recycle!) and stick it between the two halves of your polystyrene ball.
Now…
5. Now, grab a large paperclip and untwist it so that it only has one bend in it. It will look a bit like a ‘U’ with one side longer than the other.
6. (With teacher assistance), poke the longest pointy end through the ball (through the hole in the middle of the CD). The shorter pointy end will stick into the ball as well, but don’t poke it all the way through. Leave the little ‘u-bend’ sticking out the bottom of your ball. You can tie string to this loop to add information cards to your mobile.
7. At the top of your ball, you’ll now have the long end of the paper-clip sticking out. Bend it over to create another ‘u-bend’ and stick the end back into the ball. You can now tie string to the top too, to hang the mobile up or add even more information!
Have fun!!
